We’re taking comments on your ideas about taxi service in the City of Austin. In discussions for franchise renewals for Yellow Cab, Austin Cab and Lone Star Cab, City officials, cab drivers and the franchisees are exploring ways to improve how taxi policies are set that best meet the needs of everyone, including customers.     Use the number of “green” vehicles in a fleet as a key performance indicator to authorize a franchise agreement with the City.

                  As independent contractors, taxi drivers are not employees of the cab franchises. But drivers would like for franchises to establish a workers' compensation-style system that provides compensation medical care for drivers who are injured in the course of doing their job.

                    Allow cab drivers to submit tax returns or information from their logs, such as meters, number of trips, miles driven, etc., to the City to compare with the data submitted by the franchises as part of the franchise authorization process.
